The Battle for Raqqa: Berlin 1945 or Seville 1936?

June 11, 2016 -
Svyatoslav Knyazev, PolitRussia -
Translated by J. Arnoldski

Around May 20th, the so-called “Syrian Democratic Forces”, the main component of which are Kurdish militias, undertook a rather serious attempt to advance on the Syrian capital of ISIS, Raqqa. They undertook this action not by themselves but apparently on the initiative of the United States. Before the beginning of the offensive, the four-star general and head of the Central Command of the US Armed Forces (CENTCOM), Joseph Leonard Votel, visited Northern Syria.

Syria and Russia vs. the Kurds and the US

It is difficult to believe, and it indeed smacks of surrealism, that the Syrian Democratic Forces include Kurdish brigades, i.e., the natural enemies of the US’ NATO ally, Turkey, and the sworn allies of the US’ natural enemy, Assad. Nevertheless, they are supported by approximately 250 American “military advisors/marines” (apparently these are US special operation forces), around 20 American combat aircraft, and up to a thousand PMSC mercenaries from NATO countries.

According to Washington’s official position, badge-wearing Americans are not participating in combat operations. But according to media reports, they are in fact personally fighting in the most difficult zones and are directing the targeting of US aircraft. The Yankee’s activity is confirmed by the fact that they have successfully spread scandalous photo and video materials in which they can be seen wearing the stripes of the Kurdish People’s Self-Defense Forces who make up the backbone of the SDF.

Such open support on the part of the Americans for Syrian Kurds has caused a painful reaction on the part of Ankara, which considers the Kurdish People’s Self-Defense Forces to be a terrorist organization. The Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mevlut Cavusoglu, has accused the US of double standards and advised them to wear the badges of the Islamic State. He said:

“It is unacceptable that our allies have worn the chevrons of the Kurdish People’s Self-Defense Forces. We have responded to this by declaring that it is unacceptable. These are double standards and manifestations of duplicity. We advise them to wear the chevrons of the ‘Islamic State’, ‘Jebat al-Nusra’ and ‘Al-Qaeda’ when traveling to other regions of Syria. And when they go to Africa, let them wear the stripes of Boko Haram.”

US officials apologized without any special servility, but have promised to ban “fraternal badge-wearing” with Kurds.

However, the fact remains that the Americans are formally coordinating Kurdish operations against the Islamic State, which has received practically overt support from the US-allied Persian Gulf monarchies and allied Turkey, and which, according to number of analysts, itself emerged and expanded not without Washington's help.

In this situation, Syrian-Russian-Iranian forces are acting at the same time as allies and rivals of the Kurdish-American alliance, and began to advance towards Raqqa a few days after the SDF did.

Experts have begun to predict who will reach the ISIS capital first, who will hoist his flag of victory first, and whether or not there will be a direct confrontation between the American special forces accompanying the Kurds and the legal Syrian government aided by Russian troops. The Financial Times anxiously suggested that “the battle for Raqqa risks pitting Russian and US forces against each other” and pondered whether it would be possible to avoid such an undesirable collision. The hope is that American and Russian forces have already worked out cooperation.

It is by all means possible to understand the passions and attention of journalists. Capturing ISIS’ capital would be a grand media victory even more significant than the liberation of Palmyra. And Palmyra, in addition to its world fame for its cultural heritage, is extremely important infrastructurally as the “central intersection” of the Syrian desert.

In addition to its military value as the seizure of one of ISIS strongholds, the capture of is Raqqa is also ideologically important. A successful storm of the city would show that the “Caliphate” can’t even keep what it has proclaimed to be its own home.

If the Syrians, Russians, and Iranians achieve this, then they will show the whole world that they are the main fighters against terrorism and are fundamentally in control of the situation in the country. If the Americans and Kurds get ahead of them, then, firstly, the success at Palmyra will pale in comparison and, secondly, Raqqa, with its enormous slice of North-Eastern Syria, could be carved into a Kurdish national formation (whether federated or independent).

The US absolutely does not want to see Assad’s army in Raqqa. The State Department Spokesman, Mark Toner, directly stated:

“I do not have full information about the progress of the battle for Raqqa. If the city were to be liberated, then we would evaluate this like the liberation of Palmyra. It would be better than the presence of ISIS terrorists, but not much better.”

How much further to Raqqa? The positions of each side

For now, the possibility of clashes between Russian and US troops is unrealistic. The SDF have formally accumulated around 30 - 50,000 fighters  for the offensive according to different reports. In reality, however, only 4-5,000 of them have been deployed towards Raqqa and are mostly bogged down in positional battles for a few small villages. Although the Kurdish positions were originally 30-45 kilometers from Raqqa, they have essentially failed to advance. On the other hand, the SDF has built up a fairly successful offensive on the city of Manbij in the direction of Aleppo.

Syrian government forces are successfully advancing in the direction of the city of Tabqa located 40 kilometers from Raqqa. According to some reports, they were able to advance up to 30-35 kilometers in the first few days. According to the latest information, the frontline units of the Syrian Army are positioned 18 kilometers from Tabqa. On the map below, the deployment of the Syrian Army (the yellow at the bottom) and Kurdish brigades (yellow at the top) can be seen in reference to the city of Raqqa located on the Euphrates river midway between these forces.

Along the Homs-Raqqa highway are advancing Desert Falcon brigades, 18 tank divisions, 4 mechanized divisions, a regiment from Golan and the marine corps of Syria, with a total personnel of around 4,500 people. The road before them is being “cleared” by Russian attack helicopters. In addition to old Soviet tanks and conventional machine-gun-mounted trucks, a T-90 and the newest “Tiger” combat vehicle are taking part in the offensive. Media reports have said that Russian Spetsnaz are also operating on the ground with the Syrians.

Using long-range communications, ISIS has tried to strike their flanks and cut off the group from the main force, but this has failed. Despite the fact that the terrorists have reported their move to the highway, this in fact turned out to be a lie - in reality, they moved forward a little, but were soon defeated and retreated.

Why is their no advance on Tabqa? Besides the fact that this is the “gateway” to Raqqa, there is also a hydroelectric power station and airfield, the control of which would untie the hands of Russian air forces. At the present moment, the home base of our aircraft is a bit distant from Raqqa, which adversely affects the capabilities of our airmen.

Taking Tabqa would give the Syrians a significant advantage in the offensive on Raqqa.

But then again, why are the Americans and the Kurds not throwing all of their forces towards Raqqa? It’s possible that the reason behind this is that they have other goals, namely, the necessity of seizing the above-mentioned town of Manbij. This city is one of the key points on the road between Aleppo and Raqqa. In addition, it is simultaneously a bridge between Syrian Islamic terrorists operating in the area and Turkey, as well as the barrier separating Kurdish enclaves. The latter deserves a more detailed discussion in order to understand the new plan of the US.

Kurdistan as a tool for dividing Syria

In March 2016, Kurdish “cantons” announced the creation of a federal entity called Rojava in Northern Syria. The key role in this process was played by the “Democratic Union” which, according to statements by the Turks, is linked to the Kurdistan Workers Party professing a national-Marxist ideology. The Democratic Union is not so much striving for independence from Syria as it is demanding autonomy from Bashar al-Assad. Moreover, this union plays a key role in the operations of the Kurdish self-defense brigades. In addition to the DU, there also exists the anti-Assad, more right-wing Kurdish National Council which insists that the “Democratic Union” is incapable of defending Kurdish interests.

Kurdish autonomy already de-facto exists, but de jure it is not recognized by Syria or neighboring countries. Assad has reacted to any talks on the autonomy of this or that region quite painfully, which has added fuel to the fire and strengthened the hitherto not-too-powerful Kurdish National Council. This is forcing the Democratic Union to engage in operations in order to restore its credibility. The Americans are cleverly playing with these contradictions and have hinted that they will protect the Kurds while trying to bring the Democratic Union closer to them by using the fact that it is located between Damascus and Ankara, i.e., between the hammer and the anvil.

When they started the revolutionary adventure in Damascus, the US needed all of Syria as a key transport hub of the Middle East. Assad was a key obstacle preventing American allies in the Persian Gulf from laying down pipelines through Syria running to Europe. Following the intervention of the Russian airforce, they were no longer capable of taking the whole of Syria. After all, how can they gain access to the sea in Latakia now that there’s a Russian base there?

It is for this reason that the US has left its bet on Kurdistan, and moreover a Syrian-Iraqi-Turkish one, since access to the sea can now only be achieved via Turkey. The key to the process of this creation is Manbij, the capture of which would allow them to begin to physically unite the Kurdish “cantons” and access the “gate” to Turkey.

It’s clear that the Turks have figured some of this out and are not too happy about what’s happening, but who is asking them anyway? For the Persian Gulf Monarchies, it would of course be better to control this pipeline corridor directly through their spiritually dear and financed ISIS. But if the Caliphate in Syria fails, then in the worst case scenario there will still be the American-Kurdish variant.

Moscow and Damascus’ task is sufficiently difficult. First of all, they need to take Raqqa, which will be far from simple. Secondly, they have to stabilize the situation in the Aleppo area and thereby shuffle the Turks’ and Americans’ cards. Thirdly, and this depends 99% on Assad, they need to resume talks with the Kurds and persuade them to return to a normal existence in the framework of a unitary Syrian state, even a federal one. Completing this task would be an almost complete victory for Russia and Assad. The rest will just be matter of technique.

Seville 1936

Similarities between the aspirations of the “allies” for Raqqa and 1945 undoubtedly exist. In both cases, Moscow and Washington competed for influence on a territory liberated from an aggressor. In both cases, the position of Moscow was more altruistic and constructive, while Washington’s was cynical. Then, just as now, the US fought with one hand while supporting the aggressor with the other. Just as how US special services cooperated with the Nazis, so do they now have close contacts with the terrorists.

But the role of the battle for Raqqa in 2016 is inferior in importance to the role of the battle for Berlin in 1945. Rather, it is a prelude comparable in significance to the Spanish Civil War when each side tested its strength and tested new tactics and new kinds of weapons. The main battle will - God forbid that it comes to this - take place in the European and Far Eastern theaters - which is fine, if only it would be a political-economic and informational one.

Assad equipped German Secret Service the passport numbers for the passports captured by ISIS. They didn't believe him

Manuel Bewarder, Florian Flade,
In Die Welt, May 19, 2016

Translated from German by Tom Winter.

Note: This Die Welt write-up first presents Assad just as the US State Department, or even Senator McCain would. But there was a surprise...

The secret journeys of the BND to Damascus and the Syrian dictator are counted as illegal. Yet European intelligence services are once again seeking contact with his regime. Even the Federal Intelligence Service. Bashar Assad, our enemy and helper?

It is a dilemma. How to deal with Bashar al-Assad? An outlaw dictator who is responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of people. Who massacred his his people for years with poison gas and barrel bombs. Who has forced millions of people to flee. Meanwhile his fall has become increasingly unlikely through the backup from Moscow and Tehran.

Angela Merkel (CDU) embarked a few months on a surprising new tone when she spoke about the war in Syria. "There have to be talks with many players," said the Chancellor with a view to a possible end to the crisis. "This includes Assad."

The Federal Government is therefore prepared to shake hands with the despot. What seems like an absolute turnaround isn't, actually. Talks at the security services level with the Syrian regime are again being conducted. Under the table.

According to digging by Welt am Sonntag, there is a lively exchange between Europe and the Syrian secret security apparatus. They are primarily directed at the common enemy: the terrorist militia Islamic State (IS).

The Assad regime has even provided information that could have stopped some of the Paris-bombers. Assad, our enemy and helper?

The wire to Damascus is precious

The Federal Intelligence Service (Bundesnachrichtendienst, BND) has contacts with a total of 451 secret services in 167 countries. The BND President Gerhard Schindler repeatedly stresses this. The Germans are appreciated as reliable partner by the Americans, the British, the French, the Israelis. The German spy-chief only speaks reluctantly about contacts in certain other countries. Russia or China, for example. Or even the regime in Syria.

Here, the wire to Damascus for the German agency is extremely valuable. In Syria there's a humanitarian disaster underway. Millions of people are on the run. Add to the mix the civil war now involving Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and others. The country has become a training center for thousands of jihadists.

"We need reliable findings about travel routes," said BND Schindler in a speech in October 2014, as already Islamists by the hundreds traveled to the region from Germany. "We need reliable findings on the returnees." And: "Finally, we need reliable findings on possible planned attacks against targets in the west." All this "can only happen by working together with the services of the region." Cooperation in turn implies: give and take.

The interplay of German diplomacy and the secret services in the Middle East have traditionally not been the worst. There are good contacts not only with Israel but also with the Lebanese Hezbollah, and Hamas. And even in Syria, there have always been contacts. Many veteran Syrian intelligence people were formed in the GDR.

After the attacks of 11 September 2001, the BND intensified the contacts with Damascus. While the US government officially denominated Syria as a "rogue state," German officials helped the CIA with the rendition of the Hamburg Islamist Mohammed Haydar Zammar to Syria. There he was interrogated in prison, by, among others, officials of the Bundeskriminalamt (Federal Crime Service, BKA).

"Morality is no category"

With the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011 silence reigned. Torture chambers full of corpses, barrel bombs, and even the use of poison gas - Assad used almost everything in order to completely himself on the world's political stage.** The German Embassy in Damascus has been essentially shut down since the spring of 2012.

But it is precisely in such a situation that policy surrenders, and the cooperation of intelligence services becomes essential, according to security sources. Conversation threads need to be maintained at least at the lowest level. "Morality is not a category," said a BND agent.

Not later than spring 2013, when the German journalist Armin Wertz was kidnapped in Aleppo, the German and Syrian spies came closer again. There were media reports that even BND President Schindler personally traveled to Syria in the BND airliner. Even though this may not ring true.

But in the BND Beirut offices several meetings have already been woven together, including in recent months. Every now and then there have been rushing convoys of German agents from from the neighboring country to the Syrian capital. An interlocutor for the Germans on the spot being General Ali Mamluk, Assad's security adviser and intelligence coordinator.

The fight against IS has priority

The intentions of the delicate missions are clear: The Germans want to keep their important role in the region. If German soldiers are stationed there, they want to be able to protect them.*** And again and again it's a matter of getting kidneapped Germn citizens freed.

But the priority is the fight against IS. Together against terrorists - with this slogan Assad tries to stir the Western community towards cooperation. European and American angst about terrorists used as a possible stirrup for a return to the world stage, and this tactic could be successful. Because not only the Germans were in on such meetings, but also the British, French and Spanish have been in Damascus, already in 2013.

Within a few months, Assad gave a list to the  Europeans. This is a list of numbers of 3,800 blank Syrian passports that the IS csptured in the cities of Rakka and Deir ez-Zour. The fear was great that jihadists could use the documents to go undetected to Europe.

A thesis, which should prove to be true in a terrible manner. Assad's people even used an official channel, namely the Damascus Interpol Office, summer of 2014. Implying the direct cooperation of the regime. Contact persons are Colonel Khalid al-Hussain and Major General Abdel Karim Mohammed Haj Saleh.

The officials were afraid

Insiders evaluate the disclosure of passport numbers now as "a sign that Assad was serious.". Initially, however, the skepticism was high. What is Assad intending? What does he want in return? In was intensively discussed in the Joint counterterrorism center in Berlin-Treptow. Perhaps the Syrian rulers even wanted to lay a false trail for hunting opponents of the regime.

Dictators use the Interpol manhunts for persecuting unwelcome opposition. With the so-called "Rotecken" -Steckbriefen, police authorities around the world are invited world to arrest the wanted person upon entry. The Assad regime has spurred over 25 manhunts of this type in recent years.

Despite such concerns the German security officials resolved to take the information on the stolen passports seriously. In spring 2015, the Federal Police issued an internal warning about jihadists with forged passports. The officials knew that not everyone was checked correctly at Europe's external borders. They were scared.

On November 13, 2015 IS terrorists ended up killing 130 people in bars and a concert hall. At least two of the bombers had the falsified Syrian passports. They had come in camoflaged as refugees via Turkey and Greece into Europe. The documents that they used were on the list that Assad had warned the Europeans about. Ironically.

Assad: Syria's New Constitution Will Not Be Submitted From Abroad

Translated by Ollie Richardson for Fort Russ
27th May, 2016

The office of the President of Syria Bashar al-Assad said that the draft of the new Constitution of the country will not be submitted by someone from abroad. It can only be formed by citizens of the Syrian Arab Rrepublic.

"Any draft of the new Constitution of the SAR will not be submitted from abroad; only the Syrians can agree on it. The project will be put to a referendum," quotes RIA Novosti.

It is noted that there is not even a draft version of the Constitution, therefore all information about its existence is not true.

No Tweet Zone: Washington Defeated in Syria's Cyberspace

By Ollie Richardson for Fort Russ
14th April, 2016

Since its onset in 2011, the war in Syria has oscillated from being a total disaster for Bashar al-Assad, to now being a catalyst for the strengthening of the entire Middle East. It is no secret that before Russia entered the arena in September 2015, the democratically elected Syrian government was very close to suffering the same fate as Gaddafi's did previously. The key difference is that the Western powers were unable to establish a no fly zone over Damascus due to the European Union member-states not wanting to buy what Washington was selling. This meant that Obama had to do what he wanted to do the least - engage in a war vs Arab guerillas. Israel had tried to do the same thing versus Hezbollah multiple times in the post-WW2 environment, with each attempt ending the same way - in failure.

Unfortunately for Washington and its puppets, what doesn't kill the Syrian Arab Army makes them stronger. As a result of this war, the Army's soldiers are now some of the most tried and tested warriors in all of the Middle East, and, in combination with the IRGC and Hezbollah, spearhead a formidable deterrent to any future Atlanticist incursion.

But the way in which the general public has spectated this war is relatively contemporary in nature. No longer are spectators lagging behind the events as they unfold in realtime. For example, citizens of the US would primarily learn about the events of WW1 & 2 in Europe via newspapers that were sold in the streets. As technology became more sophisticated, and the time domain in which the sphere of information was sent and received became shorter (in the milliseconds), the closer the media narrative was to the facts on the ground.

Currently, a Syrian Arab Army soldier can record an incident on their smart phone, upload it to YouTube, and reply to comments on the video within seconds. The very nature of this truncated communication relay means that, as the saying goes, a photo (or video) can say a thousand words, which is important when we consider that Twitter, the main method of communicating the course of a war today, has a 140 character limit.

The Russian Ministry of Defence has successfully utilised the post-modern digital information space to not only accompany and blog about their operation in Syria, but also to counter the aggressive spinning of events from the West and allies.

Whilst the video below is a vapid attack on the Syrian government, the indirect core message rings true - the information war runs parallel to the ground war.

The video below shows that the initial organic protests in Syria were hijacked by American NGOs, and used against the legitimate government in the name of 'democracy'.

As a result, websites like Al Masdar News were launched by activists who refused to allow Syria to become Libya 2.0.

Header of the website 'Al Masdar News'

Because of websites like Al Masdar, who obtain their information directly from Syrian Arab Army soldiers and commanders, the Western 'color revolution' style of reporting has been outed for what it is - disinformation. The digital version of newspapers like The Telegraph, anti-Russia, anti-Assad, pro-IMF etc. in nature, have to cite legitimate information sources for fear of being polarised from the consensus on what is happening in Syria.

The presence of reliable and authentic information sources has meant that the process of overviewing the Russian operation in Syria is no longer a task akin to chasing one's own tail. An example of an overview that is effective and concise is the one featured below by the Levantine Group:

Levantine Group was born from the recognition that risk management needs to be brought into the 21st century to match new technology and the increasing speed of information.

We recognize that the expanding number and diverse nature of risks faced by professionals operating in volatile areas, as well as the broadening number of factors that you (as a journalist, diplomat, or security manager) need to take into consideration in your daily decision-making, require new tools and solutions.

The report uses maps to illustrate the course of events involving Russia in Syria all the way up to the present day battle for Aleppo. The assessment of Russia's objectives is fair and actually reflects the fact that, for Russia, protecting the Tartus Port had the utmost priority, and for this to happen, there needed to be stability in Damascus.

Secondary to this was sending of various messages to not only Washington, but also to NATO, who are creeping closer to Russia's borders as each day passes. Various Russian military equipment was tested in real combat, and the prized S-400 was deployed to Latakia thanks to Mr Erdogan's moment of madness. Hezbollah obtained anti-air missile systems from Russia, whilst the Syrian Army received a plethora (T-90 tank for example) of equipment for modernisation purposes.

Finally, Russia reinforced its position as a long-term global leader, and not just a "regional leader," to quote the words of President Obama. Putin's now famous speech at the UN, where he said the phrase "what have you done?", referring to the US' lawlessness in the Middle East since the inception of the CIA, sent shockwaves down the channels of diplomacy, as Washington was left to pretend that Syria's liberation was actually the Pentagon's doing.

The report however does use the Orwellian language that is prominent in the 'on the fence' style of reporting on Syria, using words like "warplanes" and "regime", but this choice of words does not alter the facts. In addition, the assertion that the flow of migrants to Europe "benefits Russia" due to the rise of the "far right" is certainly something we've heard before from the MSM. However, an unstable Balkans, Serbia in particular, only hurts Russia, something the instigators of the refugee crisis knew all too well...

Perhaps the best option for Hillary Clinton, should she become the US President in November, is to establish a 'No Tweet Zone' in Syria's digital clouds...

Drawing some Conclusions after 5 Years of War in Syria

April 12, 2016 -
Youssef A. Khaddour, Katehon -

It's a bitter five years that have been endured by the Syrian people as a whole. Those who are either pro-state or in opposition have experienced this war. These two parties are the only ones who love and work for the homeland, of course according to the vision of each party in regards to the country and the leadership of the country. The behavior of each party is dependent on a long time procedure, which was built through the influence of different factors and formats on the concept of each party. Although the concepts of the pro-state party and the opponent’s party are different, there are still many common values between them both, like loving the country and seeing their land as a great land from the point of view of history and culture. Even the fighting against each other has their love for their homeland in common.
Both parties have given a lot in terms of martyrs, who were put on the sacrificial altar of the homeland, or in terms of the economic burden suffered by the Syrian people, which amounted to a degree that is hard to believe that any other people can endure, or in terms of the psychological burden caused by this war, which changed the peaceful and beautiful reality of co-existence to the contrary. Doubt began to enter into the souls and the hearts, asking about the reality of co-existence.
Here, once again, the Syrian people showed a huge understanding, analyzed the situation, and knew what was meant by co-existence and cohesion between themselves. The Syrian people built a collective consciousness that is aware that what is happening in Syria is a "conspiracy and not a revolution". They knew that what happened in Syria was happening due to the will of the countries that want to destroy Syria. Some are hopeful of the possibility of looting our wealth and the others saw in Syria (Levant) a center, from a historical and cultural point of view, for human values, while these "others" in our region do not have the minimum level of these values and think that money can compensate for these values.
These two parties in Syria were probably, at the beginning of the crisis, in two positions close to each other, especially in terms of objecting to some phenomena of the internal situation that existed in Syria, which President Bashar Assad indicated to them. Perhaps the two parties could have stood in the same position if the course of events in Syria had happened differently. Many from both sides receded after the first months of the crisis, and were content with monitoring and trying to understand what is going on in Syria. This period of retreating and overlooking from both Syrian parties was not long; they discovered that what is happening cannot be described as a "revolution", and those who were carrying weapons cannot be "revolutionaries", as "revolutionaries" do not kill their own people, they do not tear hearts from the chest, they do not destroy their land, and they never do such dirty acts like the ones these "revolutionaries" actually have done.
After five years of war in Syria, the Syrians have discovered that: (these are only a few examples from a more extensive list):
  • Most of the factions that claim to be opposition are either takfiri, belonging to the key founders of the old or new colonial powers such as "ISIS" and "Al-Nusra", or are affiliated with regional countries that support them both financially and logistically.
  • Most of the leaders of the opposition belong to that generation of officials who were involved in the looting of the bounties of this country, and all of them are known.
  • As a result, the so-called "revolution" was a disaster for all the Syrian people from both parties, especially for the popular environment, but not some participants of wars and crises.
  • As a result, the resistance to the international conspiracy against Syria is greater. Despite all that has happened, there is still a homeland, infrastructure can be rebuilt, and the souls have learned that co-existence is the only correct option, which is better than fighting and permanent conflict.
  • A real friend is one who struggled and made sacrifices to keep Syria independent. The Syrian people will never forget their true friends from Russia, Hezbollah, Iran, and China.
  • Policy plays a key role, not religion or caste or creed or race. All of these narrow identities are used by our enemies to tear countries apart.
  • The Syrian state is a state for all people and the Syrian leadership is working in favor of Syria and for the interests of Syria and its people.
  • The Russian state is a global state that holds human values close and works for them, (of course in addition to its interests), and stood by the Syrian people at a very critical point. We have to remember that Syria, without Russian intervention, could have become a failed state like Libya and Somalia. The Syrians will also never forget that the US and its allies, especially Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey are the main catalysts for everything bad that happened in Syria.
