Bolivia's Evo Morales pledges to recognize Crimea and support "anti-imperialist Russia"

June 2, 2016 -
Translated by J. Arnoldski

Bolivian President Evo Morales stated on Thursday in an interview with RIA Novosti that Russia can count on his country’s support for recognizing Crimea.

Responding to the question as to whether it should be expected that Sucre will take additional steps towards a Bolivian recognition of Crimea as part of Russia, Morales said:

“We are together with Russia in the case of any American aggression against Russia. Whether we are dealing with aggression of a political, economic, geographic, or military character, let Russia count on Bolivia and our support.”

According to the president, Bolivia has deep disagreements with the policies which the US is pursuing in Latin America.

“Thanks to the unity of the Bolivian people as a result of which we are politically liberated from the US Embassy and economically liberated from the International Monetary Fund, things are better for us now. And the people support this. We are here as anti-imperialists, and we strongly support anti-imperialist countries,” Morales said.

“And above all, we respect Russia and admire her,” the head of state added.

In recent times, the issue of recognizing Crimea as a part of Russia has become all the more prevalent. On Tuesday, May 31st, for example, intentions to submit a resolution for consideration by the deputies of the parliament of the Germany city of Quakenbruck was announced by the head of the Left faction, Andreas Maurer.

On May 18th, the Italian region of Veneto’s regional council adopted an appeal to the national government which called to condemn the EU’s policy towards Crimea and abolish European sanctions against Russia. In June, similar documents are to be considered by the councils of two more Italian regions, Lombardy and Liguria.

Cracks in the Washington/EU wall: Another council will weigh in on ending sanctions and recognizing Crimea

The University at Quackenbrueck

"Sanctions ... have led to a 'catastrophic situation' for German agriculture"

Russian.RT, June 1, 2016
Translated from Russian by Tom Winter

The Parliament of the German city of Quakenbrück may consider recognition of Crimea as part of Russia, and repealing the anti-Russian sanctions. Andreas Maurer, Chairman of the Deputies of the Left faction of the city parliament, plans to introduce the statement.

As the politician said, the sanctions against the Russian Federation and the loss of Russian markets have led to a "catastrophic situation" for German agriculture.

"We can put such questions as they have done in Italy. I thought to appeal to my colleagues in East Germany, as they are there in most parliaments, and it is reality, to make such an appeal.

In my own parliament I will put this question unambiguously, although we do not have the majority there," sai Maurer as quoted by RiaNovosti.

He noted that this will "provide a platform for discussion and an opportunity for argument" and will "show the face of the other parties."

A day earlier, Foreign Minister of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier offered to consider the possibility of a phased lifting of sanctions with Russia. He linked this process with the progress in the implementation of the Minsk agreements on Ukraine.

Steinmeier acknowledged that there is growing resistance in the European Union to the extension of sanctions against Russia.

Recall, the French Parliament voted first in the EU for the lifting of sanctions against Russia.* The corresponding resolution was approved by the French National Assembly on April 28.

Further, in the Veneto region of Italy on May 18, the Council adopted a resolution calling on government to condemn the EU policy regarding the Crimea and to achieve the abolition of restrictions in respect of the Russian Federation.

In addition, in June a resolution on recognition of the Crimea will be presented in the regional councils in two more Italian regions - Lombardy and Liguria.

Translator follow-up: Another double-barreled resolution(Crimea, sanctions) will soon happen in another region of Italy, Tuscany.

A German delegation of representatives of the public and political life of Germany is visiting the capital of the peninsula.

The visit was organized as part of an extensive program of "Days of German Culture" and the "People's diplomacy" project, subtitled "Mutual understanding between peoples." They are on the peninsula from 25 May to 1 June.

In the capital of Crimea representatives of the German delegation attended a concert of the creative collectives of the people of Crimea.

The main purpose of the visit of the foreign guests is the creation of a positive image of the Crimea and Russia, as well as the breaking of the information blockade.

"The other day dozens of representatives of German business, social and political life of Germany arrived in order to get acquainted with the real situation in the country and to see what is happening. The main objective of this project - strengthening the image of our multinational peninsula in the international arena. We wish that as many people as possible in the world be aware that the Crimea is a territory of peace and harmony," said Yuri Hempel, the organizer of the event.

Also, in the Simferopol Ice Palace there was a friendly hockey match between the amateur teams from Simferopol and Stuttgart. Lagoda, the Simferopol hockey team, a part of the Night Hockey League of amateur teams of the Crimean Federal District, defeated the "Ice Wolves" from Stuttgart, whose players are former professional athletes, by a score of 8: 6.

Savchenko: If There Is a Third World War, Then Crimea Will Return

Translated by Ollie Richardson for Fort Russ
27th May, 2016

This was stated by the Ukrainian pilot, pardoned by Russian President at the request of the widows of Russian journalists,  at a press conference.

Nadezhda Savchenko told reporters that if a Third world war is started, Crimea will become Ukrainian.

"And if it will not, then they need to reach out to people and explain that they made a mistake and fix it," said the Ukrainian pilot.

As a reminder, the exchange of Nadiya Savchenko with Alexander Alexandrov and Evgeny Yerofeyev became known on the morning of May 25th. This operation was prepared under a "confidential" signature stamp. Alexandrov and Yerofeyev, who were captured in Donbass in the past year, have been pardoned by the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko.

Third Strand of Crimea Energy Bridge Launched

Translated by Ollie Richardson for Fort Russ
14th April, 2016

The third strand of the energy bridge in the Crimean Federal district was put into operation ahead of schedule. Its launch helped to increase the maximum power transmitted across the energy bridge. This was reported by the Russian Ministry of Energy.

"After the early launch of the third line, the total volume of alloted power to Crimea increased to 1060 MW excluding alternative and backup power sources. The maximum peak consumption on the Peninsula in the spring is expected to be no more than 1100 MW, that is, after today's launch, the shutting down of the power supply will almost be completely stopped," — said energy Minister Alexander Novak.

That third strand of the power bridge will be launched today, said the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, speaking at Straight Line.

"Overall, we are approaching the volume of flow that was carried from the Ukrainian territory", — said the Russian leader.

According to him, the fourth strand of another 200 MW, which will completely replace the volume that came from Ukraine, will be running within two to three weeks.

Poklonskaya Suspends the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatars

Translated by Ollie Richardson for Fort Russ
13th April, 2016

The Crimean Prosecutor's office has ruled to suspend the activities of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatars. This was reported by TASS, citing the head of Department Natalia Poklonskaya.

Today I made the decision to suspend the activities of the public association "the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people" in order to prevent violations of Federal law, she said.

"The rights of the public association have been suspended. They are forbidden from using all state and municipal mass media, they are not able to carry out various mass public events, bank deposits, and generally from carrying out any work. All of their propaganda will be banned," explained the Prosecutor of Crimea.

Earlier, Natalia Poklonskaya presented evidence at the court hearings in Crimea that the leaders of the "Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people", Mustafa Dzhemilev, Refat Chubarov, and Lenur Islyamov were involved in sabotage against Crimea.

Kiev Junta is Preparing to Shoot Down Planes Over Crimea

Translated by Ollie Richardson for Fort Russ
9th April, 2016

The Kiev junta is preparing to shoot down planes over Crimea. Two S-300 systems were installed in the Henichesk district, Kherson region. Residents, as well as the military, reported that these systems are on alert and are supplied with everything needed to ensure the smooth operation of these SAMs. Officially, the regime claims that the deployment of the systems is supposedly designed to protect the territory of Ukraine on the border with Crimea. However, this is not true, according to Kherson politician Aleksey Zhuravko.

Activist warned, with reference to its sources, that there is a high probability that the S-300 can be used for provocations similar to the downed Malaysian Boeing over Donbass. The politician wrote this on his social network, attaching a photo of the area where the SAM is deployed.

"From serious sources: SAM is not installed to protect the territory of Ukraine, but to commit provocations against the Russian Federation. The whole situation with the advent of SAM in the Kherson area reminds me of the preparation for the implementation of the scenario according to the example of the downed Boeing 777 flight MH-17 over Donbass. According to a high-ranking military source, these systems will not be operated by local Kherson troops, but by the Ukrainian military personnel brought here from another area.

I am extremely worried about the situation on the border with Crimea in connection with the arrival of SAM systems. I want to warn everyone that today's bloody Kiev government is ready for anything and will stop at nothing. If a plane is shot down in the skies over Crimea, you know that the responsibility for this will fall on the current leadership of Ukraine: the President, the government, and Parliament," said Zhuravko.

"I appeal to the entire European community, including europarliamentarians. Please work pro-actively and prevent new casualties," said the politician, summarizing his message.

"Suicide Bomber Battalion" Formed on the Crimean Border

Translated by Ollie Richardson for Fort Russ
9th April, 2016

The situation on the border with Crimea is far from ideal. Here, in cooperation with volunteers from the Aidar and Azov battalions, Crimean Tatar activists operate who, after their leader Refat Chubarov's meeting with the Turkish leadership, started to form a national military unit. At the same time the Turkish authorities were equipping these units, the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko personally took a ride on the frigate "Hetman Sahaidachny" in Istanbul and brought them new uniforms.

Now the situation on the border with Crimea is on the verge of a social explosion. The excesses of the Tatar youths, among which activists of the extremist Turkish organization "Grey wolves" are seen, get on the nerves of the region's people. It came to the point that the leaders of the Majlis demanded the Ukrainian authorities allocate them a portion of the territory of the Kherson region to create their own enclave.

The news that Crimean Tatars will ask for the most "appetizing" areas near the black sea coast is not much of a surprise as it has already happened in Crimea. Meanwhile, the Genichesk, Kalanchak, and Chaplynka districts are undergoing attacks on representatives of local business, during which the blockades by the activists extort financial support for their activities.

Now the passion has begun to subside a bit due to the fact that the activities of the organizers of the blockade of Crimea went far beyond the legal framework and drew the attention of the police and also the world community. In the end, they were forced to remove their posts and join the border guards, the so-called "public control" over the movement of people and goods across the border.

However, this activity also cannot fool anybody. Currently, there is a rapid formation of Crimean Tatar units. The "Crimea" Battalion had been previously created. Despite the number of volunteers falling short of a fully-fledged division, the soldiers have already been in the area of the ATO.

Currently the head of the Mejlis, Mustafa Dzhemilev announced the formation of a new battalion called "Asker". He does not hide the fact that he supports bloody acts and the destabilization of the situation in Crimea. Volunteers who have been recruited in this formation called themselves the "Suicide Bomber Battalion" because they assert that they are prepared to "help" their compatriots on the Peninsula.

Despite the statement of Petro Poroshenko that Crimea will be returned peacefully, on March 21st, Chubarov spoke about a military solution to the issue. In his words, the Crimean Tatar units will follow the advancing units of the Ukrainian troops and will bring order to the territory.

Belarus Recognizes Crimea as Russian

Translated by Ollie Richardson for Fort Russ
9th April, 2016

Belarus' position on the issue of the status of Crimea stems from the actual situation around the Peninsula. Such a statement was made by the Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei at a press conference in Moscow on Friday, April 8th, reported "Interfax".

The diplomat stressed that "it is now important to preserve the territorial integrity of the rest of Ukraine".

"On the question of the recognition of Crimea, we should proceed from fact, who does own Crimea today de facto," said the Minister, answering a question about whether Belarus formally recognizes Crimea as part of Russia. "Nobody demands from us the requirement of recognising [Crimea]", quotes RIA Novosti from the Minster.

In mid-March, the Foreign Ministry of Belarus warned the citizens of the Republic on administrative responsibility, according to Ukrainian legislation, for visiting Crimea. "While visiting Crimea through the territory of the Russian Federation, citizens of the Republic of Belarus should bear in mind that this may be grounds for the refusal of entry (...) to the territory of Ukraine, bringing them to administrative responsibility in accordance with the Ukrainian legislation," said the representative of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry.

In May 2015, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said that Minsk is opposed to the Western effort to involve him in the dispute over Crimea. "We must first solve the problem [of establishing peace in Ukraine], and then we will understand who is right or wrong," said the Belarusian leader.

Crimea became part of Russia in March 2014 after a referendum in which the overwhelming majority of the population who participated in the voting voted for this decision. Kiev refused to recognize the results of the referendum. Moscow, in turn, emphasized that the procedure for annexation of Crimea is consistent with international law.

Review of Gubarev's Tell-All: The Torch of Novorossiya - Part 1

April 1, 2016 -
Jacek C. Kaminski, Geopolityka
Translated by J. Arnoldski

"The Lonely Fight of Novorossiya: A review of Pavel Gubarev's book The Torch of Novorossiya"

Pavel Gubarev’s book The Torch of Novorossiya is an extremely important source for understanding the essence of the dramatic political and military struggles now taking place in Ukraine. We are dealing not only with the testimony of an important participant in the events, but also the bold forecasts of a political visionary which have a fair chance of being realized.

In Poland, the 32-year old figure of Pavel Gubarev might be forgotten, but in Ukraine, and especially in Donetsk, he still has a considerable number of followers. We recall that the author was one of the initiators of the uprising in Donbass which led to the proclamation of the Donetsk People’s Republic and the civil war in Ukraine. After the victory of the Euromaidan in Kiev, he initiated the creation of the People’s Militia of Donbass which became the core of the DPR army. On March 1, 2014, Gubarev became the People’s Governor of the Donetsk region, a development which gave the signal for an uprising against the Euromaidan putschists of Kiev.

After being detained by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) within a week, he was released months following his arrest in the course of war prisoner exchanges thanks to the efforts of the rebel garrison in Slavyansk and the legendary Colonel Igor Strelkov. During the war, Gubarev organized logistics and supplies for Slavyansk after being stormed by soldiers of the Kiev junta and he stood at the head of the “Novorossiya” political movement. He now holds some criticisms of the current authorities of the people’s republics of Donbass, but he nevertheless believes in the realization of his idea of a Great Novorossiya. His proposed vision makes up one of the parts of the publication.

The book consists of around 400 pages and is divided into two separate parts. In the first part, Pavel Gubarev remembers the events of the so-called Russian Spring in Ukraine instigated by the February coup in Kiev in 2014. In the second part, he outlines his vision of the socio-economic system and postulates as to the political system of the state of Novorossiya. Discussing the political events of tumultuous 2014 in chronological order, he also points out the origins of the resistance movement and comments on the socio-political conditions which caused the residents of Donbass and other regions of South-East Ukraine to revolt. The immediate spark that led to this was, of course, the notorious Euromaidan and the resultant seizure of power by pro-Western oligarchs and ultra-nationalist Banderites. This situation was unacceptable for the pro-Russian oriented population of Southeastern Ukraine.

The author also draws attention to the deep social basis of the rebellion: “The collapse of the Soviet Union and ‘liberal market reforms’ brought hell. Deindustrialization, poverty, wild corruption of the ‘elites’, insane social stratification, and the extinction of the indigenous population,” Pavel Gubarev writes. This process is compared to an overrunning of the country by barbarian hordes. Supposedly independent Ukraine was rendered dependent on the West and ruled by a parasitic class of oligarchs. “Becoming ‘independent,’ Ukraine turned into an impoverished country, a territory of degradation and savagery,” Gubarev suggests. The victory of the Euromaidan meant an overflowing of the cup of bitterness of the pro-Russian minded residents of the [southeastern] regions.

In the case of P. Gubarev, the factor which motivated him to fight was his apocalyptic vision of the future of world capitalism, whose degradation of Ukraine was only the prelude. “Everywhere, ordinary people are confronted with what degrades them into enslaved cattle and forces them to exist in some kind of charmed circle. Even in the esteemed West, the praised welfare state is a thing of the past. Everywhere the rich are becoming more and more of a closed caste, the middle class is being eroded, and the majority of people are being impoverished. Everywhere the majority of people are pushed away from power.(…) The 21st century will become the ‘bitter age’ for the masses. The trend is obvious  - the rich will become even more richer and powerful(…)And their subjects are waiting for progressive atomization. For the first time in many centuries, they are becoming physically and mentally weaker than their masters.(…) Ukraine’s place in the new reality is unfortunate. It will become one of the poor, diseased states,” the author prophecies.

The Anti-Oligarch Uprising

The anti-oligarch uprising in Donbass was supposed to protect the region from the fate of plummeting into the abyss with Ukraine. The uprising’s initiator, Gubarev, reveals many interesting facts of the political “kitchen” of the anti-Maidan movement. He emphasizes first and foremost that the social explosion in Donbass was led by the actions of a handful of activists who gathered together spontaneously without any movement and whose efforts culminated in the warmer days of March 2014 in the People’s Militia of Donbass.

The reign of the oligarchs, including the last of their team, Victor Yanukovich, had led an almost complete sterilization of the country’s independent political groups, especially those with a pro-Russian orientation close to the spirit of the author’s Russian (All-Russian) national idea. Organizations such as the Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine, which Pavel Gubarev represented as a local councilmen for short period of time, were effectively marginalized by financial and administrative factors. They were unwanted competitors of the Party of Regions in the struggle for the votes of the pro-Russian electorate.

According to Pavel Gubarev, Russophobic “non-governmental organizations” had complete freedom of action thanks to financing from the West. They conducted intensive work among youth with the aims of nationalist or liberal indoctrination. They also worked in Donbass, but there they found themselves on exclusively ungrateful soil. The author estimates that at the moment of the explosion of the Euromaidan, Western NGO’s had an army of 150,000 so-called volunteers, or paid activists, in Ukraine. On the other side there was only the bureaucratic structure of the Party of Regions, the majority of whose “regionals” joined the victorious camp after the first shock. Gubarev describes his impressions of the congress of the Party of Regions in Kharkov on February 22, 2014: “It became obvious that the ‘elite’ organized in the Party of Regions decided not to go up against the competing group which won on the Maidan. Moreover, one could feel their reluctance to fight, their passivity, their weakness, and fear.”

“Then it became clear to me: no one will protect us except we ourselves,” he summarizes the moment of his decision to participate in the resistance movement.

It is necessary to emphasize that during the eight years preceding the Euromaidan, Pavel Gubarev remained aloof from politics, busying himself with an advertising agency and family life. Only this breakthrough led him to begin gathering his widespread ideological friends based on personal contacts and social networks on the internet. He scavenged the first money for activities, $40,000, by stripping his own firm. Set up in this way, an ad hoc group of several dozen people over the course of literally a few days  “swung” Donbass, escalating the rebellious mood. “What our enemies developed over years and decades we had to create in a hurry, in the space of a few days.(…) Propaganda, propaganda, propaganda. As in the days of Lenin and his ‘Spark’” - he recalled. The task was made easier thanks to the fact that a social basis for such a movement already existed. “We became the trigger that launched the organized resistance movement in Donbass,” Gubarev summarizes.

Even though it was hoped for a long time that it would be possible to avoid armed confrontation with Kiev, it is no secret that one of the main tasks of the group from day one was acquiring weapons. It was hoped that the Kremlin would come to the aid of rebellious Donbass and the other regions of South-East Ukraine with the variant of peaceful annexation of these territories to the Russian Federation as was realized with Crimea. This calculation was based entirely on knowledge gained from the media, because Gubarev had no contact with Moscow. He discloses that the first such contact appeared only on March 5, the day before his arrest and already after the first storming of public administration buildings, when his mobile phone was called by Vladimir Putin’s advisor, Sergey Glazyev. “The phone call literally shocked me. Glazyev said the he supports our deeds in the anti-fascist struggle. These simple words gave me strength,” Gubarev recalls.

Against the Ukros

The leader of the resistance of Donbass defends his decision to arm his supporters. “Raging Ukro-Nazis were beginning to destroy Soviet monuments. Were we supposed to dutifully wait until this crazy beast came to us? Or were we to lay down our heads before the heirs of the Hitlerites and their indigenous henchmen?(…) Time quickly showed that we were right. In Odessa, where the “Kuliovo Field” movement decided not to take up weapons in hand and did not worry about the force of the authorities but instead hoped to peacefully collect signatures for the autonomy of Novorossiya, their people were simply burned alive. In Zaporozhye, a rally was brutally broken up by force.”

He argues: “In Kharkov, the pro-Russian scene agreed to cooperate with mayor Gennady Kernes. Our friends from other regions of Great Novorossiya made a huge mistake: they agreed to cooperation with the local elite which soon sold them out, and they found themselves in the dungeons of the SBU.” In Donbass, the decisive factor was actually the rejection of any cooperation during the first few days with local politicians and officials, especially with the team of the “owner” of the region, Rinat Akhmetov. Gubarev stresses that the March uprising was simultaneously fighting against both the Kiev junta and the local oligarchs.

In the book, Gubarev cites his associate Sergey Tsyplakov on the interesting case of psychological breakthrough that came with weapons, violence, and the defensive fighting: “On March 7 or 8, I considered the SBU’s breaking into Gubarev’s apartment with the aim of seizing his personal belongings to be unacceptable, so on April 8 or 9 I purchased 10 firearms from bandits. The psychological barriers hindering operation in combat conditions quickly collapsed.”

The key period after Gubarev’s arrest and the occurrence of incidents in Donbass are described by the author when recalling the memories of his colleagues. He proudly underlines the fact that his exclusion from action did not break the resistance which had already acquired a dynamic of its own. He especially emphasizes the role of his people in establishing contact with Strelkov’s group and helping to transport it from the border to Slavyansk, which became the bastion of the nascent Donetsk People’s Republic. The retelling of this expedition reads like a spy novel and Strelkov’s figure itself is controversial. Gubarev recalls in his superlatives: “[He was] the most brave and most honest person. An unselfish patriot. I would not present him as a genius of all time, but he was in the right place as a commander.”
