Lithuanian Seimas Registers Resolution to Prepare for War with Russia

The resolution on the "general readiness of the citizens for defense" involves the mobilization of the army. 

Member of the Lithuanian parliamentary faction "the Fatherland Union" — Christian Democrats of Lithuania, Rasa Juknevičienė,  prepared on March 29th, and registered in Parliament, a resolution on the "prevention preparedness of the citizens for defense", which "establishes the need to consistently attend permanent universal military conscription - where young men are drafted to serve immediately after secondary school or when they turn 18 years old", reported IA Regnum citing the Lithuanian Seimas.

"This initiative arose when the experience of the return of compulsory military service within the last year was assessed, and when it was recognized that the principle of a random lottery had not received the support of the majority of society. With this resolution, it is hoped a discussion will start in the future to form a trained reserve. I would like to see political parties and their representatives in the Sejm think responsibly, and continue to prepare society for defense," said Juknevičienė.

The resolution stresses that "the threat caused by the aggressive policy of Russia to the security of the entire region and Lithuania is long-term, and could continue into the next few decades, and to contain it requires obvious practical training, not only for the military, but for the general defenses too." In addition, it states that "to ensure the territorial defence of Lithuania, there is a necessity for a mixed model army, which includes the regular army and a trained reserve, and that current levels of military service (only 3 thousand draftees annually) is too low for the formation of a sufficient reserve in the near future".

The document suggests that the government, "until May 1st of this year, perform the necessary calculations on how a defense system would be ready to move to a system of universal military service, and to submit to the Parliament  by September 10th of this year amendments to the laws necessary for the transition to universal military service". 

Recall that Lithuania was returned to military duty in connection to "any aggression by Russia".
