(VIDEO) Russia Mi-28 "Night Hunter" outflies ISIS fire, supports Syrian offensive on Shaer

June 7, 2016 -
Translated by J. Arnoldski

ISIS terrorists filmed their attack on a Russian Mi-28 “Night Hunter” attack helicopter. Such helicopters are supporting the Syrian Army’s ground offensive at the Shaer gas fields near Palmyra.

In the footage taken yesterday, June 5th, terrorists open fire on the Russian combat helicopter with a heavy machine gun.

The helicopter fired from its cannon and struck with unguided aviation rockets (NAR’s) while escaping ISIS militants’ fire. Black smoke from the NAR’s is clearly visible in the air.

Syrian Arab Army Enters Province of Raqqa (VIDEO)

Fort Russ - 4th June, 2016

Translated by Tom Winter

The Syrian army has entered the territory of Raqqa, which has long been under the full control of the ISIS militants. It is reported by Reuters, citing the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

As noted in the Observatory, the Russian Air Force helped support the advancing government troops. Previously, we recall, the Russian Defense Ministry said that a number of ISIS targets were eliminated north-west of Raqqa.

Yesterday the news portal Conflict News posted a video of the massacre of inhabitants in the Slough district in Raqqa. The people were trying to demonstrate against the terrorists, but as people approached, they opened fire on them with machine guns.

Raqqa is the de facto capital of the so-called "Islamic State" in Syria, like Mosul in Iraq.

ISIS Vehicles Use Ukrainian Steel

Translated by Ollie Richardson for Fort Russ
31st May, 2016

Steel from Ukraine was found on an armoured car in the garage of militants in Iraq.

A video was published on the Internet of the Iraqi military investigating a "Islamic state" building captured the day before.

The video was posted on Live Leak. The description of the video states that the soldiers of the Iraqi army seized a cache of explosives and a garage with armored vehicles of ISIS.

It is alleged that the steel sheets that covered the cars were made in Ukraine. In the video the corresponding marking "Made in Ukraine" can be seen.

Earlier it was reported that ISIS had included Ukraine on the list of enemies. In November last year, the militants released a video where Ukraine and 60 other states were labelled as the enemy.

Recall that on November 20th, Kuwait announced the arrest of a group of six people who supplied weapons to ISIS from Ukraine. Note that the Defense Ministry did not confirm the information that Ukraine is allegedly involved in the supply of weapons to ISIS.

The "Islamic State" spoke about Ukraine for the first time in mid-November. The militants called Ukraine a battleground between the West and Russia.

Assad equipped German Secret Service the passport numbers for the passports captured by ISIS. They didn't believe him

Manuel Bewarder, Florian Flade,
In Die Welt, May 19, 2016

Translated from German by Tom Winter.

Note: This Die Welt write-up first presents Assad just as the US State Department, or even Senator McCain would. But there was a surprise...

The secret journeys of the BND to Damascus and the Syrian dictator are counted as illegal. Yet European intelligence services are once again seeking contact with his regime. Even the Federal Intelligence Service. Bashar Assad, our enemy and helper?

It is a dilemma. How to deal with Bashar al-Assad? An outlaw dictator who is responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of people. Who massacred his his people for years with poison gas and barrel bombs. Who has forced millions of people to flee. Meanwhile his fall has become increasingly unlikely through the backup from Moscow and Tehran.

Angela Merkel (CDU) embarked a few months on a surprising new tone when she spoke about the war in Syria. "There have to be talks with many players," said the Chancellor with a view to a possible end to the crisis. "This includes Assad."

The Federal Government is therefore prepared to shake hands with the despot. What seems like an absolute turnaround isn't, actually. Talks at the security services level with the Syrian regime are again being conducted. Under the table.

According to digging by Welt am Sonntag, there is a lively exchange between Europe and the Syrian secret security apparatus. They are primarily directed at the common enemy: the terrorist militia Islamic State (IS).

The Assad regime has even provided information that could have stopped some of the Paris-bombers. Assad, our enemy and helper?

The wire to Damascus is precious

The Federal Intelligence Service (Bundesnachrichtendienst, BND) has contacts with a total of 451 secret services in 167 countries. The BND President Gerhard Schindler repeatedly stresses this. The Germans are appreciated as reliable partner by the Americans, the British, the French, the Israelis. The German spy-chief only speaks reluctantly about contacts in certain other countries. Russia or China, for example. Or even the regime in Syria.

Here, the wire to Damascus for the German agency is extremely valuable. In Syria there's a humanitarian disaster underway. Millions of people are on the run. Add to the mix the civil war now involving Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and others. The country has become a training center for thousands of jihadists.

"We need reliable findings about travel routes," said BND Schindler in a speech in October 2014, as already Islamists by the hundreds traveled to the region from Germany. "We need reliable findings on the returnees." And: "Finally, we need reliable findings on possible planned attacks against targets in the west." All this "can only happen by working together with the services of the region." Cooperation in turn implies: give and take.

The interplay of German diplomacy and the secret services in the Middle East have traditionally not been the worst. There are good contacts not only with Israel but also with the Lebanese Hezbollah, and Hamas. And even in Syria, there have always been contacts. Many veteran Syrian intelligence people were formed in the GDR.

After the attacks of 11 September 2001, the BND intensified the contacts with Damascus. While the US government officially denominated Syria as a "rogue state," German officials helped the CIA with the rendition of the Hamburg Islamist Mohammed Haydar Zammar to Syria. There he was interrogated in prison, by, among others, officials of the Bundeskriminalamt (Federal Crime Service, BKA).

"Morality is no category"

With the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011 silence reigned. Torture chambers full of corpses, barrel bombs, and even the use of poison gas - Assad used almost everything in order to completely himself on the world's political stage.** The German Embassy in Damascus has been essentially shut down since the spring of 2012.

But it is precisely in such a situation that policy surrenders, and the cooperation of intelligence services becomes essential, according to security sources. Conversation threads need to be maintained at least at the lowest level. "Morality is not a category," said a BND agent.

Not later than spring 2013, when the German journalist Armin Wertz was kidnapped in Aleppo, the German and Syrian spies came closer again. There were media reports that even BND President Schindler personally traveled to Syria in the BND airliner. Even though this may not ring true.

But in the BND Beirut offices several meetings have already been woven together, including in recent months. Every now and then there have been rushing convoys of German agents from from the neighboring country to the Syrian capital. An interlocutor for the Germans on the spot being General Ali Mamluk, Assad's security adviser and intelligence coordinator.

The fight against IS has priority

The intentions of the delicate missions are clear: The Germans want to keep their important role in the region. If German soldiers are stationed there, they want to be able to protect them.*** And again and again it's a matter of getting kidneapped Germn citizens freed.

But the priority is the fight against IS. Together against terrorists - with this slogan Assad tries to stir the Western community towards cooperation. European and American angst about terrorists used as a possible stirrup for a return to the world stage, and this tactic could be successful. Because not only the Germans were in on such meetings, but also the British, French and Spanish have been in Damascus, already in 2013.

Within a few months, Assad gave a list to the  Europeans. This is a list of numbers of 3,800 blank Syrian passports that the IS csptured in the cities of Rakka and Deir ez-Zour. The fear was great that jihadists could use the documents to go undetected to Europe.

A thesis, which should prove to be true in a terrible manner. Assad's people even used an official channel, namely the Damascus Interpol Office, summer of 2014. Implying the direct cooperation of the regime. Contact persons are Colonel Khalid al-Hussain and Major General Abdel Karim Mohammed Haj Saleh.

The officials were afraid

Insiders evaluate the disclosure of passport numbers now as "a sign that Assad was serious.". Initially, however, the skepticism was high. What is Assad intending? What does he want in return? In was intensively discussed in the Joint counterterrorism center in Berlin-Treptow. Perhaps the Syrian rulers even wanted to lay a false trail for hunting opponents of the regime.

Dictators use the Interpol manhunts for persecuting unwelcome opposition. With the so-called "Rotecken" -Steckbriefen, police authorities around the world are invited world to arrest the wanted person upon entry. The Assad regime has spurred over 25 manhunts of this type in recent years.

Despite such concerns the German security officials resolved to take the information on the stolen passports seriously. In spring 2015, the Federal Police issued an internal warning about jihadists with forged passports. The officials knew that not everyone was checked correctly at Europe's external borders. They were scared.

On November 13, 2015 IS terrorists ended up killing 130 people in bars and a concert hall. At least two of the bombers had the falsified Syrian passports. They had come in camoflaged as refugees via Turkey and Greece into Europe. The documents that they used were on the list that Assad had warned the Europeans about. Ironically.

The battle for Aleppo is coming. The foreseeable outcome will lead to a spike in terrorist acts

"The battle of Aleppo should spell the end of Islamic State military ambitions in Syria. Unfortunately, this defeat will lead to an increase of terrorist activity using the surviving soldiers."

In Boulevard Voltaire, April 12, 2016
Translated by Tom Winter April 13, 2016
Jihadist leaders need to regain control of territory and want to achieve a significant victory.
The Russian withdrawal from Syria has caused much commentary with various appreciations. Among these were the dropping of Bashar al-Assad at the end of victorious mission. But in announcing the withdrawal of Russian forces, President Putin made it clear that the Russian bombers could be right back if needed.
The campaign conducted by the Russian air inflicted severe damage on the Islamic Army, also led to the scattering of troops. This dispersion made them less vulnerable to airstrikes. As the scale of the targets decreased the airstrikes lost efficiency. The commitment of fighter-bombers on targets that were getting smaller and smaller became disproportionate.

The dispersal of troops has allowed the Syrian army to conduct operations related to its capabilities. Thus the Syrian army has retaken many towns and and has recaptured Palmyra.

Elsewhere, the near-closure of the border with Turkey has been limiting the supply of human and material resources. What remains available to the Islamic army are forces dispersed by aviation.

Since the end of the Russian air intervention in Syria, the Syrian army has slowly engaged in a war of reconquest. With the aerial threat reduced, the Islamic army can again move and use its logistics. Today we are witnessing the consolidation of the Islamic State forces near Aleppo to go on the offensive.

Obviously jihadist leaders need to regain control of the land and want to achieve a significant victory to compensate for the loss of bastions on the road from Raqqa and especially the loss of Palmyra with all the symbolism attached to it. But by consolidating their forces in the Aleppo region, they give another opportunity for Russian aviation or cruise missiles, to re-enter the action. A massive confrontation with the Syrian armed forces is a throw of the dice for the Islamic State, entailing, as it does large losses of fighters in new air strikes.

The battle of Aleppo should spell the end of the military ambitions of the Islamic state in Syria. Unfortunately, this defeat will lead to an increase of terrorist activity using the surviving soldiers. A victory for Damascus over the Islamic army in Aleppo must be considered by the French government as a signal for more vigilance at the borders and within the national territory.

With their virtuous attitudes chastened, our leaders will ask our intelligence services to enhance their activities with the Maghreb countries, the Middle East and South Caucasus.
The defense of France must include collecting and using information from all the countries fighting against terrorism, including Syria and Russia ...

Drawing some Conclusions after 5 Years of War in Syria

April 12, 2016 -
Youssef A. Khaddour, Katehon -

It's a bitter five years that have been endured by the Syrian people as a whole. Those who are either pro-state or in opposition have experienced this war. These two parties are the only ones who love and work for the homeland, of course according to the vision of each party in regards to the country and the leadership of the country. The behavior of each party is dependent on a long time procedure, which was built through the influence of different factors and formats on the concept of each party. Although the concepts of the pro-state party and the opponent’s party are different, there are still many common values between them both, like loving the country and seeing their land as a great land from the point of view of history and culture. Even the fighting against each other has their love for their homeland in common.
Both parties have given a lot in terms of martyrs, who were put on the sacrificial altar of the homeland, or in terms of the economic burden suffered by the Syrian people, which amounted to a degree that is hard to believe that any other people can endure, or in terms of the psychological burden caused by this war, which changed the peaceful and beautiful reality of co-existence to the contrary. Doubt began to enter into the souls and the hearts, asking about the reality of co-existence.
Here, once again, the Syrian people showed a huge understanding, analyzed the situation, and knew what was meant by co-existence and cohesion between themselves. The Syrian people built a collective consciousness that is aware that what is happening in Syria is a "conspiracy and not a revolution". They knew that what happened in Syria was happening due to the will of the countries that want to destroy Syria. Some are hopeful of the possibility of looting our wealth and the others saw in Syria (Levant) a center, from a historical and cultural point of view, for human values, while these "others" in our region do not have the minimum level of these values and think that money can compensate for these values.
These two parties in Syria were probably, at the beginning of the crisis, in two positions close to each other, especially in terms of objecting to some phenomena of the internal situation that existed in Syria, which President Bashar Assad indicated to them. Perhaps the two parties could have stood in the same position if the course of events in Syria had happened differently. Many from both sides receded after the first months of the crisis, and were content with monitoring and trying to understand what is going on in Syria. This period of retreating and overlooking from both Syrian parties was not long; they discovered that what is happening cannot be described as a "revolution", and those who were carrying weapons cannot be "revolutionaries", as "revolutionaries" do not kill their own people, they do not tear hearts from the chest, they do not destroy their land, and they never do such dirty acts like the ones these "revolutionaries" actually have done.
After five years of war in Syria, the Syrians have discovered that: (these are only a few examples from a more extensive list):
  • Most of the factions that claim to be opposition are either takfiri, belonging to the key founders of the old or new colonial powers such as "ISIS" and "Al-Nusra", or are affiliated with regional countries that support them both financially and logistically.
  • Most of the leaders of the opposition belong to that generation of officials who were involved in the looting of the bounties of this country, and all of them are known.
  • As a result, the so-called "revolution" was a disaster for all the Syrian people from both parties, especially for the popular environment, but not some participants of wars and crises.
  • As a result, the resistance to the international conspiracy against Syria is greater. Despite all that has happened, there is still a homeland, infrastructure can be rebuilt, and the souls have learned that co-existence is the only correct option, which is better than fighting and permanent conflict.
  • A real friend is one who struggled and made sacrifices to keep Syria independent. The Syrian people will never forget their true friends from Russia, Hezbollah, Iran, and China.
  • Policy plays a key role, not religion or caste or creed or race. All of these narrow identities are used by our enemies to tear countries apart.
  • The Syrian state is a state for all people and the Syrian leadership is working in favor of Syria and for the interests of Syria and its people.
  • The Russian state is a global state that holds human values close and works for them, (of course in addition to its interests), and stood by the Syrian people at a very critical point. We have to remember that Syria, without Russian intervention, could have become a failed state like Libya and Somalia. The Syrians will also never forget that the US and its allies, especially Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey are the main catalysts for everything bad that happened in Syria.

Netanyahu: Israel Has Carried out Dozens of Operations in Syria

Translated by Ollie Richardson for Fort Russ
11th April, 2016

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has, for the first time, acknowledged that the Israeli Army has conducted many operations in Syria.

"When it is necessary to act, we act. We operate here outside of our country, undertaking dozens of attacks, to prevent weapons that could upset the delicate balance falling into the hands of Hezbollah", — quotes RIA Novosti from the words of the Israeli leader.

"We are acting on other fronts, far and near, but act thoughtfully and carefully", — said the Prime Minister.
