A referendum on the question of South Ossetia becoming part of the Russian Federation is set to take place in 2017.
The corresponding statement was signed by President Leonid Tibilov and the speaker of parliament, Anatoly Bibilov. The document was adopted during a session of the president of the republic’s political council in which public authorities and the representatives of political parties and social organizations of the republic participated.
“Guided by the long-term interests of the South Ossetian people and with the aim of ensuring socio-political stability in the Republic of South Ossetia, on March 26th, 2016, we hereby issue a joint statement in support of the decision of the president of the Republic of South Ossetia’s political council on the feasibility of holding a referendum on the accession of the Republic of South Ossetia to the Russian Federation in 2017,” RIA Novosti quotes the statement as saying.
The document stated that the vote will take place after presidential elections in the republic.
In early April, Leonid Tibilov announced plans to hold a referendum on amendments to the constitution’s republic in order to allow for the possibility of establishing a union state with Russia. According to him, amendments to Article 10 of the basic law will give him the right to appeal to the President of the Russian Federation with the proposal to create a unitary union body, “to which we will surrender our authority.”
“In this way, we will save Russia from political risks which could arise over the course of a direct accession,” the head of South Ossetia explained.
