Did Odessa Surrender?

Translated by Ollie Richardson for Fort Russ
12th April, 2016

I got goosebumps when I was reading what our Odessa women wrote, and after I read it I had a lump in my throat!

Excuse me, but I posted this to my Facebook page, and if someone else says that Odessa is sleeping or surrendered, don't be offended, but I will have to talk to this person in crude abusive language, said Colonel Galina Zaporozhceva.

"Whoever can say that war is not terrible knows nothing about war."

But in the real war you have a gun that can be used as defense... But here Monika pulls from her handbag a wooden mallet wrapped in a plastic bag, and Ksenia shows carefully sharpened nails. Girls, my girls...

But them [pro-Ukrainian militans - O.R], they have bats, pumped up muscles in training camps, and the desire to kill.

No channel will show how yesterday our Odessa's girls were beating those Nazis who attacked them, with their bags and shouted "How we are fed up of you!".

Maybe someone heard the rollicking song "Odessa's woman - that's how she is". And indeed, that's how they are - Odessa's women at time of junta's occupation.

Someday, after victory, the phenomenon of Kulikovo field will go down in the history books. The vigorous Odessa protest, a protest of women and pensioners. Men among us too, but they are few. Because it is dangerous. Men are almost immediately arrested. They also have infinitely accumulated hatred - we realized it yesterday when we saw how cops were enthusiastically beating the Nazis.

Odessa men will rise up when the time will come.

For a while it's Kulikovo field that keeps the defence.

Are we scared? Very! To be honest going to a regular meeting to the House of Trade Unions, we do not know if we'll be able to come back home.

And yesterday, when we raced the crowd, ready to kill, we all froze, but didn't budge. Then we all confessed that our mouths were dry - adrenaline manifested its presence. Someone had a heart seizure, another one had kidney's pain.

I woke up at half past five, with a start. And then came the tears. Just a waterfall. And I'm not at all ashamed to confess it. And thank God, it poured out stress.

Are we scared? Yes!

Will we back to Kulikovo again? Yes, there is no alternative!

Remember the story of Galina Zaporozhceva. Several women in Donetsk asked the priest whether they should leave for Russia. He said, "The Lord has prepared crowns for you, and you want to give them up?"

We do not give up our crowns, and religion has nothing to do with it. We are sent a test, and we will pass it. We owe it to our grandfathers and great-grandfathers. And understand them as never before. They were also afraid. But they brought us victory.

Now it's our turn.
